Ben Tre province announces geographical indication of Xiem Coconut and Green Skin Pomelo.

In this morning 15/3, in Ben Tre province, Intellectual Property Department (Ministry of Science and Technology) coordinated with Ben Tre Provincial People’s Committee to officially announce “Ben Tre” geographical indication for two products, Xiem Coconut and Green Skin Pomelo.

The Ben Tre province’s report shows that the province now has over 7000 hectares of Green Skin Pomelo and approximately 8,000 hectares of Green Coconut and are two key products that Ben Tre is developing towards improving value chain, sustainability. Not only domestic consumption, Green skin pomelo and Xiem coconut are also promoted to export globally.

On the basis of legal protection of geographical indications; consumers, farmers, manufacturers, traders will be more aware of Intellectual Property, that will facilitate traceability, from there, confirming the reputation and quality of these two specialties.

Xiem coconut and Green skin pomelo is the first two products of Ben Tre province to be granted a certificate of registration of geographical indication. It is also one of main products, high profit, playing an important role for the socio-economic development of Ben Tre province, contributing to generate the employment, rising the income and enhancing the life of farmers.

“Ben Tre province issued lots of policies, programs in order to promote the development of those main products following value chain, involving Resolution No. 03-NQ-TU of the Provincial Party Committee about enhancing agricultural product’s value chain towards sustainability in the period 2016-2020 and orientating to 2025. Especially, Ben Tre geographical indication gained the achievement thanks to the timely instruction and support of the Ministry of Science and Technology.” Mr. Vo Thanh Hao – Provincial Party Committee Secretary, Chairman of People’s Council of Ben Tre said.

Currently, Ben Tre province has 7200 hectares Green skin pomelo (accounting for 28% fruit area), in which the area of harvesting trees is over 5000 hectares, newly cultivating 2200 hectares, in which there are 130 hectares cultivating pomelo following Viet Gap and Global Gap certificate, production is approximately 12 tons/hectare with the supply capacity over 60,000 tons/year. Coconut cultivating area of province is over 70000 hectares (accounting for 40% of the total coconut area of the country), in which, Xiem coconut area is approximately 8000 hectares.

Farmers received merit from officials

Speaking at the Announcement Ceremony, Director of Dinh Huu Phi Intellectual Property Department said, granting Ben Tre geographical indication for Green skin pomelo and Xiem Coconut products is the important legal basis for businesses, producers to improve reputation, develop market, protect the quality, origin of products for consumers. Thereby promoting the development of agricultural products of businesses, farmers in applying science and technology, organizing production, processing and trading local products in the development process.

Mr. Dinh Huu Phi also noted that granting the geographical indication is a first step in the process of the production organization, business and promotion of products bearing geographical indication because most of the production organization’s production scale are small, weakly connect with value chain, the product quality is also weak… Therefore, on the totally oriental basis for main products in the province, Ben Tre necessarily build synchronous solutions, efficiency about production organization, procession and commerce; necessarily haves support policies about the sources to manage geographical indications in the province; continually support businesses, cooperatives about sources to push up promoting activities, developing market channels for farmers.

In the future, the Intellectual Property Department will accelerate the review of geographical indication granting for products commercial freshwater prawn and Ba Tri cow of Ben Tre province.
