FRESH AND FROZEN TARO

Taro is a herbaceous plants with height about 0.5-2 meters. Taro consists of 1 central bulb usually lying under the ground, from which the leaves grow upwards, roots grow downwards and cormels grow horizontally to the sides. There are 2 kinds of taro:

– Colocasia antiquorum: Taro with small central bulb and many cormels

– Colocasia esculenta: Taro with big central bulb and few cormels.

Taro is suitable to be planted for the soil which is sandy, rich in humus and with good drainage. In Vietnam, it is mainly grown in the plains and midlands. In the north of Vietnam, taro is mostly grown in the mountainous and midland provinces such as Yen Bai, Lai Chau, Thai Nguyen, Bac Kan, Hoa Binh, less grown in lowland plains, which are flooded because taro will be easy to be chewy and itching. In the south of Vietnam, taro is planted in plain provinces such as An Giang, Ben Tre, Can Tho, Dong Thap… for export. Taro’s output often reaches 15-25 tons of bulk/ ha.
